Uniting a continent
After centuries of slavery, killing, and discrimination of the Aboriginals of Australia, a whole continent came to terms on a single sports occasion: when aborigine athlete Cathy freeman ignited the Olympic Fire at the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 and went on to put the nation to tears of joy when she won the gold medal in a gripping 400 m final that nobody will ever forget who was in the Olympic Stadium.

All of Australia was in a frenzy - newspapers featured her victory on an additional 20 front pages (per newspaper!) and the moment she won, the whole nation experienced an emotional meltdown like never before, putting to rest the shameful past and expressing the hope for a brighter future as equals.

 

Uniting South Africa
